Having felt nauseated all day, at first I was like OHMYGODWHATIFI’MPREGNANT (because you always start with the worst thing possible and move backward) and then I was like “Oh wait, that’s impossible” (because I don’t get laid, ever). And THEN I was like OMGWHATIFGODKNOCKEDMEUP (because sometimes my hypochondria doesn’t stay within the boundaries of reality) and even while acknowledging the impossibility of that (enter theological debate here), I realized I would still be incredibly angry and upset and violated. Cultures have seriously fucked up origin stories (I’m looking at you, Rome) but God raped the Virgin Mary, or, at least, took her body hostage with a divine parasite.
I don’t mean for that to sound flippant. Because it’s not. It’s deeply, deeply disturbing to me that one of the dominating religions on this planet originated with the non-consensual impregnation of a woman even if he never actually touched her. It’s just one more factor in the story of Christianity that I feel needs to be looked at and examined in terms of what that means about the belief system as a whole.
