Don’t do Latin.

Just don’t.

Sure, I know what you may be thinking: “If I do Latin I can be like Tom Hanks in the da Vinci code and run all around Rome reading clues in Latin and exposing conspiracies” or “If I learn Latin I can impress people with how smart I am at a language which nobody on the planet speaks” or “Hey! There’s all this cool Latin in Harry Potter, wouldn’t it be cool if I understood it?”

While all of these rationales are tempting, particularly the Harry Potter one or the Tom Hanks one (which was my reason) none of them is worth the pain, despair, madness, and soul loss that are side-effects of taking Latin.

It’s like death but not as fun.

So save yourself the tears and take some useful language, like Spanish, or French, or Klingon and skip the Latin.
